How to Make a Military Ushanka Hat111
The ushanka, a traditional Russian fur hat, has been adopted by militaries around the world due to its warmth and functionality. The hat features a round crown with ear flaps that can be tied up or buttoned down for additional protection from the cold. If you're looking to make your own ushanka hat, here's a step-by-step guide:
Materials:
Faux fur fabric for the exterior (1 yard)
Fleece fabric for the lining (1 yard)
Insulation batting (1 yard)
Thread
Sewing machine
Scissors
Measuring tape or ruler
Chalk or fabric marker
Button or toggle for closure
Instructions:1. Measure your head: Measure the circumference of your head at the widest part, just above your eyebrows. Add 2 inches to this measurement for seam allowance. This will be the circumference of the crown of your hat.
2. Cut out the crown: Cut two circles of faux fur fabric, each with a radius equal to half the crown circumference plus 1 inch for seam allowance.
3. Cut out the ear flaps: Cut four rectangles of faux fur fabric, each measuring 12 inches long by 8 inches wide. These will be the ear flaps.
4. Cut out the lining: Cut two circles of fleece fabric, each with the same radius as the crown circles. Cut four rectangles of fleece fabric, each measuring 12 inches long by 8 inches wide, for the ear flap linings.
5. Cut out the insulation: Cut two circles of insulation batting, each with a radius equal to half the crown circumference. Cut four rectangles of insulation batting, each measuring 12 inches long by 8 inches wide, for the ear flap insulation.
6. Assemble the crown: Place one of the faux fur crown circles right side up. Place one of the fleece crown circles on top, right side down. Pin the two layers together around the edge, leaving a 1-inch seam allowance. Sew around the edge, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning.
7. Turn the crown right side out: Reach into the opening and pull the hat right side out. Press the seam allowance around the opening.
8. Insert the insulation: Place one of the insulation circles inside the crown, centering it.
9. Repeat steps 6-8 for the other side of the crown: Place the remaining faux fur crown circle on top of the insulation, right side down. Pin the two layers together around the edge, leaving a 1-inch seam allowance. Sew around the edge, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning. Turn the crown right side out and press the seam allowance around the opening.
10. Sew the crown halves together: Align the two crown halves with the right sides together. Pin the edges together, leaving a 1-inch seam allowance. Sew around the edge, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning. Turn the hat right side out and press the seam allowance around the opening.
11. Assemble the ear flaps: Place one of the faux fur ear flap rectangles right side up. Place one of the fleece ear flap linings on top, right side down. Pin the two layers together around the edges, leaving a 1-inch seam allowance. Sew around the edge, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning.
12. Turn the ear flaps right side out: Reach into the opening and pull the ear flap right side out. Press the seam allowance around the opening.
13. Insert the insulation: Place one of the insulation rectangles inside the ear flap, centering it. Fold the raw edges of the ear flap over the insulation and pin in place. Sew around the edge, close to the folded edge.
14. Repeat steps 11-13 for the remaining three ear flaps: Assemble the three remaining ear flaps in the same way.
15. Attach the ear flaps to the crown: Pin the ear flaps to the crown, spacing them evenly around the edge. Sew the ear flaps to the crown, close to the edge.
16. Add a button or toggle for closure: Sew a button or toggle to the top of one of the ear flaps. Sew a corresponding button or loop to the top of the opposite ear flap. This will allow you to tie or button the ear flaps together for added warmth.
Tips:
For a more traditional look, use real fur for the exterior of the hat.
If you don't have a sewing machine, you can hand-sew the hat using a needle and thread.
Be sure to press the seam allowances as you go to ensure a neat and professional finish.
Add a pom-pom to the top of the hat for extra flair.
With a little bit of effort, you can make your own stylish and functional military ushanka hat.
